Scottish Youth Baseball Festival
Last weekend forty young ballplayers gathered in Stirling for the Scottish Youth Baseball Festival which was supported by the British Baseball Federation.
Children of varying ages learned the basics of fielding and hitting as well as pitching skills in a clinic led by Edinburgh Cannons. To add to the events on the day there were a series of T-Ball and Blitzball games and a Home Run Derby which was won by Toby Hahn who edged out Francis Hames 2-1 in the final round.
The culmination of the festival was the Scottish Championship Game where Glasgow player Kosuke Hachisuka hit a walk off grand slam as the Blue Jays beat the Cardinals, 9-5.
Gordon “Wolfie” Dean presents the Wolfie Cup
After receiving their medals at the festival pizza party the winning side were presented with a special trophy honouring the godfather of Scottish baseball, Gordon ‘Wolfie’ Dean who was on hand to present the trophy.
Despite the predictable Scottish weather the fun event was enjoyed by all with promising talent identified amongst the children. With the recent growth of the Edinburgh Giants and Glasgow Stars youth programmes, the future of Scottish baseball is looking bright.
